Stegosaurus Science Detective Pack
A Stegosaurus science detective pack for ages 9–13: weigh real evidence like a palaeontologist across five cases, from what the plates were for and whether the tail spikes really hit Allosaurus to telling males from females, Sophie’s weight and how many species there are, with full answer keys.
What’s inside:
- Start here: how palaeontologists think (claim, evidence, reasoning)
- Case 1: what were the plates for? A briefing, eight cut-out evidence cards, a for-or-against sorting table and a verdict sheet
- Case 2: did the tail spikes really hit Allosaurus? The healed tail-bone clue
- Case 3: can you tell a male Stegosaurus from a female? Two studies that disagree
- Case 4: how heavy was Sophie? Comparing weight estimates
- Case 5: how many kinds of Stegosaurus are there? The name game
- Answer keys (2 pages)
- Credits, licence & sources
Pages: 12 (including cover and credits). Sizes: A4 (210 × 297 mm) and US Letter (8.5 × 11 in), both PDFs included in one zip.
Printing: Print at 100% / actual size on A4 or US Letter. Inside pages use light backgrounds and print well in black and white; covers are dark, so start from page 2 to save ink.
Every fact is checked against the Natural History Museum (London), the Smithsonian, the American Museum of Natural History and peer-reviewed papers, plus the Colorado State Archives for the state-fossil fact (checked 27 Oct 2026), and the sources are listed on each pack’s credits page. Dinosaur sizes and weights are estimates, and where scientists still disagree, such as what the plates were for or how heavy Stegosaurus was, the packs say so. Photos and historical drawings are public-domain or CC0 images from Wikimedia Commons; new drawings, puzzles and layouts are REALLYBYTE’s own work, and those drawings are simple schematics, not exact copies of fossils. Not endorsed by the Natural History Museum, the Smithsonian or the American Museum of Natural History.
